Reptiles and birds lay eggs, but only one group bears feathers. Here's why this detail changes everything in the animal kingdom.

People often think that laying eggs is enough to make a bird. Yet many reptiles lay eggs too, without necessarily belonging to the same family. Egg-laying is therefore not a reliable criterion for identifying a bird.
The truly distinctive trait lies elsewhere, in a unique structure that isn't found in any other living species today.
Feathers, a distinctive signature
What really differentiates birds from other species are the feathers. Light, resilient and perfectly structure, they don't exist in any other animal group.
They provide insulation, display, and, of course, flight for most species.
Flight Made Possible by Plumage
Even though many birds take off with a single wingbeat, flight itself isn't what defines them. Some never fly and remain true birds.
